You may remember Ngawang from our recent Christmas newsletter. Thanks to compassionate supporters like you, 11-year-old Ngawang received the life-changing surgery and care she needed, and her future looks brighter than it has in years.

In 2021, Ngawang suffered severe burns to her chest and arm in an accident at home. Unfortunately, at the time, the complex reconstructive surgery she needed simply wasn’t available where she lived in Bhutan. As time passed, the physical injuries began to affect Ngawang. Once a confident, social child and a diligent student, Ngawang became withdrawn and struggled at school.

Her family was preparing to take out a significant loan to seek treatment overseas until they heard that an Interplast surgical team was coming to Bhutan.

Thanks to your support, Interplast specialists, along with local surgical partners, were able to assess Ngawang and schedule her for surgery.

Since then, Ngawang has undergone reconstructive surgery, skin grafting, and rehabilitation with specialist hand therapists. Just last year, she received her second surgery to release burn contractures, another critical step in her recovery.

When the volunteer surgical team returned to Bhutan, they were met by a different child. Ngawang was smiling again. She proudly shared how she had joined a soccer team and helped them win a match. Once afraid her injuries would define her future, she now dreams of becoming a lawyer.

Ngawang will still need further surgery, but the hardest part is behind her. Because of you, her childhood and her confidence is returning.

Thank you for being part of our caring community. It’s your kindness that makes life-changing surgery possible for children like Ngawang. Because of you, children whose lives are changed because of surgery can find hope and courage to chase after the dreams they once had.
